Introduction

This book will focus on the role of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in contemporary American society as diverse and inclusive environments that continue to positively impact historically excluded students. The voices of faculty, students, and staff/administration will be included to highlight innovations and contributions of HBCUs in areas of scholarship, teaching, and service. Scholarship on HBCUs tends to be written from a historical perspective and does not give voice to those currently "in the trenches". This edited volume will feature chapters written by individuals actively involved in initiatives at HBCUs throughout the country, their experiences, and their stories of how HBCUs as institutions of higher learning impact themselves and others in transformational ways.

Objective

The objective of this edited volume is to give voice to a diverse range of contributors who represent the ongoing challenges, aspirations and impact of HBCUs in the 21st century in upholding their collective mission to educate students of color who were historically excluded from institutions of higher education in a safe environment. Despite the declaration that we are living in a "post-racial America", the killing of Georgia Floyd and other incidents have sparked a racial reckoning within the United States. HBCUs are institutions with a long history of addressing racial disparities and injustices whose continued relevance is being recognized in light of recent current events. This book will serve to highlight some of the ways in which HBCUs maintain their relevance as institutions, progress with current trends, and the unique role they play within higher education.

Target Audience

The target audience for this book includes sociologists, higher education administration graduate programs, faculty and administrators at HBCUs, and other educators seeking to learn more about HBCUs. Additionally, graduate students in American Studies, African American Studies, Education Policy and similar programs would benefit from the book.
