With roots in the intertwined movements of racial justice, anti-imperialism and liberation in the 1960s and 70s, the formation of ethnic studies in the United States changed how institutions of higher education teaches race, inequality and the very history of the nation. In celebration of the 50 th anniversary of the Department of Ethnic and Race Studies at BMCC, we aim to provide a space to discuss contemporary scholarship in the field.

We invite submissions of abstracts addressing, but not limited to, the following topics:

  • Ethnic Studies: Past & Present
  • Policing of Urban Communities and Prison Abolition
  • Gendered Histories & Existences
  • Expressive Culture, Media, and Aesthetics
  • Belief Systems & Spirituality
  • Healthcare and Constructions of Health & Illness
  • Climate Justice and Crisis
  • Critical Race Theory
  • Immigration Politics
  • Democracy and the Rise of the Far Right

Submission Details: We accept abstracts for individual papers and panels. Individual paper abstracts should be 150-200 words. Panel abstracts should be 500 words max including 1-2 sentences describing each panel member's paper. Hybrid presentations are welcome.
