2025 Outstanding Article Prize

The Article Prize annually honors an outstanding peer-reviewed article focused on Africa and/or the African diaspora. The award committee will only consider scholarly articles focused on any period and from any discipline published in English and is particularly interested in publications that are methodologically and conceptually innovative and demonstrate academic excellence. Articles published within the previous calendar year (2024) are eligible for the award.

Book Prizes

2025 Outstanding First Book Prize

The Outstanding First Book prize annually honors a single-authored book focused on Africa an/or the African diaspora submitted by or on behalf of a scholar, activist, and/or artist who has not previously published a single-authored monograph. The award committee will consider books on any period and from any discipline published in English and is particularly interested in books that are methodologically and conceptually innovative and demonstrate academic excellence. Nominees for this prize who also meet the qualifications for ASWAD's Rosalyn Terborg-Penn Prize may submit their work for consideration by both prize committees. Funding for the prize is made possible by a substantial contribution from an anonymous donor.

  1. Nominations for the Outstanding First Book Prize must include a short description of the book and its significance. Nominators or authors must submit a physical copy of the book for each member of the award committee. Although physical copies of books are preferred, if your publisher will only distribute a PDF, you can/may send your PDF submission to [email protected].
  2. Books with a copyright date within the previous calendar year (2024) are eligible for the award.

 

2025 Rosayln Terborg-Penn Book Prize for Outstanding Scholarship on Gender and Sexuality in the African Diaspora

The Rosalyn Terborg-Penn Book Prize annually honors an exceptional single-authored monograph focused on gender and sexuality in Africa and/or the African diaspora submitted by or on behalf of a scholar, activist, and/or artist. The award committee will consider books on any period and from any discipline published in English and is particularly interested in books that are methodologically and conceptually innovative and demonstrate academic excellence. Nominees for this prize who also meet the qualifications for ASWAD’s P. Sterling Stuckey Prize or Outstanding First Book Prize may submit their work for consideration by all committees. Funding for the prize is made possible by a substantial contribution from anonymous donors.

2025 P. Sterling Stuckey Book Prize

The P. Sterling Stuckey Book Prize annually acknowledges books published in English submitted by or on behalf of a scholar, activist, and/or artist who has at least one previous single-authored monograph or comparable work. Nominated books must be on topics related to the study of the worldwide African diaspora. The award committee will consider books on any period from any discipline that examines the people and/or physical environment of Africa and/or its diaspora. The committee is particularly interested in books that are methodologically and conceptually innovative and demonstrate academic excellence.

  1. Nominations for The P. Sterling Stuckey Book Prize must include a short description of the book and its significance. Nominators or authors must submit a physical copy of the book for each member of the award committee.
