Dear colleagues,

It is with great pleasure that we share with you the recent announcement of the Brittenden Fellowship in Black British History along with an Associate Professorship or Professorship in Oxford’s History Faculty: https://www.queens.ox.ac.uk/news/queen’s-create-new-brittenden-fellowship-black-british-history.

We are eager to receive applications from a wide field of candidates with expertise in cultural, social or political history of people of African and/or Caribbean descent in Britain and/or Ireland. We anticipate that the appointee will start in post in September 2021, and that she/he/they will have an interest in building outwards from their knowledge to provide both survey teaching in modern British Isles, European and World History and a small number of more specialised options in (for example) the history of specific Black British communities, the history of ethnicity and race, histories of migration and empire, anti-colonialism and post-colonialism, activism, identity and social memory. The search panel welcomes applications from candidates with backgrounds in subjects other than History, such as Geography, Cultural Studies and Sociology, provided they can demonstrate competence in both research activity and teaching related to Black British History. You will find more information, including the Further Particulars and the link to apply, at https://www.queens.ox.ac.uk/associate-professorship-or-professorship-black-british-history-c1900-present.

We would be grateful if you could circulate this job announcement to colleagues who might be interested. The panel will give all applications our very serious consideration.

Both the College and the Faculty are focused on making significant strides with respect to race and diversity, both within and beyond the syllabus; the Further Particulars detail recent, current, and upcoming initiatives in this regard. As we are dedicated to the goal of building a culturally diverse and pluralistic community committed to working in a diverse environment, we strongly encourage applications from groups that have traditionally been under-represented in higher education, including women, black and minority ethnic candidates, and individuals with disabilities.

We hope that this job announcement will be of interest to a number of excellent candidates, and we invite you to contact us if you have any questions.
