The ASWAD is pleased to invite nominations for its interdisciplinary awards for outstanding publication of a book and/or article on Africa and the African Diaspora published during the 2020 calendar year. Nominees will be considered in more than one category. Nominations must be submitted by June 15, 2021.
ARTICLE PRIZE
The 2021 Outstanding Article Prize
of the Association for the Study of the Worldwide African Diaspora
The Article Prize annually honors an outstanding peer-reviewed article focused on Africa and/or the African diaspora. The award committee will consider scholarly articles on any period and from any discipline published in English and is particularly interested in publications that are methodologically and conceptually innovative and demonstrate academic excellence.
- The Outstanding Article Prize must include a short description of the article and its significance.
- Articles published within the previous calendar year (2020) are eligible for the award.
Entries must be received by June 15, 2021 to be eligible for the 2021 award.

BOOK PRIZES
2021 Outstanding First Book Prize
of the Association for the Study of the Worldwide African Diaspora
The Outstanding First Book Prize annually honors an outstanding single-authored book focused on Africa and/or the African diaspora submitted by or on behalf of a scholar, activist, and/or artist who has not previously published a single-authored monograph. The award committee will consider books on any period and from any discipline published in English and is particularly interested in books that are methodologically and conceptually innovative and demonstrate academic excellence. Nominees for this prize who also meet the qualifications for ASWAD’s Rosalyn Terborg-Penn Prize may submit their work for consideration by both prize committees. Funding for the prize is made possible by a substantial contribution from an anonymous donor.
- Nominations for the Outstanding First Book Prize must include a short description of the book and its significance. Nominators or authors must submit a physical copy of the book for each member of the award committee. Anthologies, encyclopedias, and other edited volumes will not be considered.
- Books with a copyright date within the previous calendar year (2020) are eligible for the award.
Entries must be received by June 15, 2021 to be eligible for the 2021 award.

Rosalyn Terborg-Penn Book Prize of ASWAD
For Outstanding Original Scholarship on Gender and Sexuality in the African Diaspora
The Rosalyn Terborg-Penn Book Prize annually honors an outstanding single-authored book focused on gender and sexuality in Africa and/or the African diaspora submitted by or on behalf of a scholar, activist, and/or artist. The award committee will consider books on any period and from any discipline published in English and is particularly interested in books that are methodologically and conceptually innovative and demonstrate academic excellence. Nominees for this prize who also meet the qualifications for ASWAD’s Sterling Stuckey Prize or First Book Prize may submit their work for consideration by all committees. Funding for the prize is made possible by a substantial contribution from four anonymous donors.
- Nominations for The Rosalyn Terborg-Penn Book Prize must include a short description of the book and its significance. Nominators or authors must submit a physical copy of the book for each member of the award committee. Anthologies, encyclopedias, and other edited volumes will not be considered.

The P. Sterling Stuckey Book Prize
of the Association for the Study of the Worldwide African Diaspora
The P. Sterling Stuckey Book Prize annually acknowledges books published in English submitted by or on behalf of a scholar, activist, and/or artist who has at least one previous single-authored publication. Nominated books must be on topics related to the study of the worldwide African diaspora. The award committee will consider books on any period from any discipline that examines the people and/or physical environment of Africa and/or its diaspora. The committee is particularly interested in books that are methodologically and conceptually innovative and represent literary excellence. Funding for the prize is made possible by a substantial contribution from an anonymous donor.
- Nominations for The Sterling Stuckey Book Prize must include a short description of the book and its significance. Nominators or authors must submit a physical copy of the book for each member of the award committee. Anthologies, encyclopedias, and other edited volumes will not be considered.
